How to Save a Draft on Instagram, and Where It Goes

Instagram keeps drafts on your phone, not in your account. That one detail explains where they are, how long they last and why they disappear.

Updated 2026-10-03

How to save a draft on Instagram: start a post, add a caption, edit or tag, then tap back until Instagram asks, and choose Save draft. For a Reel, tap Next twice and choose Save draft. Drafts are saved only on the phone you made them on, so they won't appear on another device and are lost if you uninstall.

That last sentence is the one that catches people. Instagram's Help Center says drafts can't be opened from another device even when you log in to the same account, and that uninstalling the app deletes them. Everything else about drafts, where to find them, how long they last and why one went missing, follows from the fact that they live on the phone.

La parte que la mayoría de las guías omite

A draft is a post that exists only on your device. It has no link, no audience and no numbers, and nobody can see it, including you from any other phone, tablet or computer. Instagram's Help Center is explicit for both posts and Reels: drafts are saved onto your device, you can't access them from another device even if you log in, and if you uninstall the app, your drafts are lost.

That makes drafts a convenient place to finish a caption and a fragile place to keep anything important. If a post matters, save the media to your camera roll as well, so the photos or video survive whatever happens to the app.

Drafts are also where timing gets decided. A post goes public the moment you share it, and the first hour is when its like count is set in front of the people who see it first. Many accounts finish posts as drafts and publish when their audience is most active. Some also add a starting count on posts that matter with Instagram likes, which adds to the public number on a published post from its link. A draft can't receive likes of any kind until it's posted.

How do you save a post as a draft on Instagram?

Instagram's Help Center gives this flow for feed posts, as of October 2026:

1. Tap Create at the top, or swipe right from anywhere in Feed.

2. Select a photo from your library, or take a new one with the camera, and tap Next.

3. Add effects or filters and tap Next.

4. Add a caption or location, then tap Back twice in the top left.

5. Tap Close, then Save draft.

One condition trips people up. Instagram says that if you don't edit the post, tag people, or add a caption or location, you won't be able to save it as a draft. An untouched photo just gets discarded when you back out, so make at least one change first.

Where do Instagram drafts go?

Post drafts and Reel drafts are kept in different places.

For posts, tap Create, the same way you'd start a new post (the full flow is in how to post on Instagram). Instagram's Help Center says to tap Drafts below the post or video, then tap the draft you want to post. If you have no drafts, the option doesn't appear.

For Reels, go to your profile, tap the Reels tab below your profile info, then tap Drafts and choose the Reel. That folder is visible only to you.

Neither location shows anything on another device, which is why someone who logs in on a new phone often thinks their drafts were deleted. They're still on the old phone, as long as the app wasn't uninstalled there.

Can you save a Reel as a draft?

Yes, two ways, and they protect you differently.

The Instagram draft: on the Reel you're making, tap Next, then tap Next again and choose Save draft at the bottom. Instagram says Reel drafts are saved until you share or delete them, and that there's no limit to how many you can keep.

The camera roll copy: on the editing screen, Instagram's Help Center describes saving the Reel to your camera roll before sharing it. A copy in your camera roll survives a new phone or a reinstall, which an Instagram draft doesn't. The catch, in Instagram's own words: downloading your Reel won't save any music you added from the Instagram music library, so you'll add the audio again when you post it.

For important Reels, do both. How to save a video on Instagram covers the difference between saving inside the app and downloading a file, and how long a Reel can be explains why a long video sometimes posts as a feed video instead.

Can you save a story as a draft?

Yes. When you leave a Story you've started without sharing it, Instagram offers to save it as a draft. Story drafts work differently from post and Reel drafts in one way that matters: when Instagram rolled them out to everyone, the app told users that Story drafts are deleted a week after they're saved, as reported by Social Media Today at the time.

Instagram's Help Center has no page on Story drafts, and where the app lists them has moved between versions; start from the Story camera's gallery area. If you're building a Story for a specific day, save the finished images or video to your camera roll too, so the week limit doesn't decide for you.

How long do drafts last on Instagram?

It depends on the type, and on the phone:

  • Reel drafts: until you share or delete them, according to Instagram's Help Center, with no limit on how many.
  • Post drafts: Instagram's Help Center doesn't set an expiry; they stay while the app stays on the device.
  • Story drafts: about a week, based on the notice Instagram showed when Story drafts launched.
  • Any draft: gone if you uninstall the app, and invisible on any other device.

Do drafts sync between devices?

No. Instagram's Help Center says drafts are saved onto your device and that you won't be able to access a saved draft from another device, even if you log in to your account. That applies to an iPhone and an iPad on the same account, to an old phone and a new one, and to Instagram on the web.

If you need to move a draft, do it by hand: open the draft on the original phone, save the media to the camera roll, move the file to the other device, and start a new post or Reel from it there. Captions don't travel with the file, so copy the caption into a note first.

Switching phones is the moment to check. Before you wipe or trade in the old one, post or export anything sitting in drafts.

Why did my Instagram draft disappear?

The common causes, roughly in order of how often they happen:

  • You're on a different device. Drafts stay on the phone where they were made.
  • The app was uninstalled or reinstalled. Instagram says drafts are lost when you uninstall, which includes deleting the app to free space or to clear its cache on an iPhone.
  • App data was cleared. On Android, Clear storage resets Instagram like a fresh install and removes what it kept on the phone.
  • You're looking in the wrong place. Reel drafts are in the Reels tab of your profile, not on the Create screen.
  • It was a Story draft older than about a week.
  • It was never saved. Backing out of an unedited post discards it instead of offering a draft.

When the draft won't post at all

If a draft opens but fails when you share it, the problem is usually the upload or an action limit, not the draft. Why you can't post on Instagram shows how to tell those apart. Once it's live, the post starts collecting likes from the first people who see it, and Instagram likes can add to that public count from the post's link. Every Instagram service is listed on the Instagram page.

Questions people ask about Instagram drafts

Can other people see my Instagram drafts?

No. Drafts exist only on your phone and aren't published anywhere. Even you can't see them from another device.

Why is there no Save draft option when I back out of a post?

Instagram only offers a draft once you've changed something. Edit the photo, tag someone, or add a caption or location, then back out again.

Will I lose my Instagram drafts if I get a new phone?

They won't move with your account. Drafts stay on the old phone, so post them or save the media to your camera roll before switching.

How many drafts can you save on Instagram?

Instagram says there's no limit to how many Reel drafts you can save. It doesn't publish a limit for post drafts either.

Does saving a Reel to your camera roll keep the music?

Not music from Instagram's library. Instagram says downloading a Reel won't save music you added from its music library, so you add the audio again when you post the file.

Is First draft the same as saving a draft?

No. First draft is an iPhone editing feature that trims your clips into a starting edit for a Reel. Saving a draft keeps an unfinished post or Reel for later.
