What Type of TikTok Account Should I Make? Personal vs Business
TikTok now calls the personal account a General account. Business accounts get ad and lead tools and lose two things most creators need: the full music library and Creator Rewards.
What type of TikTok account should I make? For almost everyone, a General account, which is what TikTok now calls the personal account. It can use the full music library, can be set to private, and is the only type that can join the Creator Rewards Program. Make a Verified Business Account only if you are a brand that needs TikTok's business tools.
The choice is one-way in practice. A business account is limited to TikTok's Commercial Music Library and is always public, and switching back costs you the verification. Those are the two facts that decide it for most people.
An account type on TikTok is the category that decides which features, music and programs your profile can use. As of October 2026, TikTok's help article on account types lists three: the General TikTok Account, the Verified Business Account and the Organization Account. The old personal, creator and business labels are gone from that page; creators now use General accounts.
The article spells out the trade. General accounts can use music and sounds from the general music library and the Commercial Music Library, can switch to private, and have access to TikTok's monetization programs. Verified Business Accounts get Business Suite, with tools such as Creative Hub and a leads manager, but they can only use the Commercial Music Library, because the general library's songs aren't cleared for commercial use, and they stay public.
None of the three types changes how many people follow you, and follower count is the first thing a visitor reads on any of them. TikTok followers add to that public number on a General or business profile alike, using only the public @. The account type itself is about tools and rules, which the sections below go through one by one.
What is the difference between a personal and business TikTok account?
Side by side, as TikTok's help center describes them in October 2026:
- Music. General: general music library plus the Commercial Music Library. Business and Organization: Commercial Music Library only.
- Privacy. General: can be made private. Business: always public.
- Money. General: access to TikTok's monetization programs, including Creator Rewards. Business: not eligible for Creator Rewards.
- Tools. Both have analytics. Business accounts add Business Suite, with Creative Hub and a leads manager.
- Verification. Business accounts must be verified by submitting business information and documents, which TikTok says can take up to 5 business days.
- Team access. Organization Accounts let several people manage one account with permission controls, and also use the Commercial Music Library.
What happened to the old business accounts
For years anyone could tap a switch and become a business account without proving anything. TikTok's current article ties business accounts to verification and says an account that doesn't verify its business may be converted automatically into a General TikTok Account. If you switched years ago to get a feature, check which type you are now in Settings and privacy, then Account.
Can business accounts use any music?
No. This is the restriction that matters most. Business and Organization accounts can only use the Commercial Music Library, a catalogue of tracks cleared for commercial use. TikTok's own explanation is that songs in the general music library aren't cleared for commercial use and are for personal entertainment.
In practice, that means most trending sounds built on popular songs aren't available to a business account. A trend that depends on a specific chart song is closed to it, and a video made with that song on a personal account may have its sound affected if the account becomes a business account, as creators commonly report. Audio you record yourself is a separate case, which how to make a sound on TikTok covers, business accounts included.
The same library rule follows you onto LIVE. How to play music on TikTok LIVE covers what the terms allow in a live stream for each account type.
Which account can join Creator Rewards?
Only a General account. TikTok's Creator Rewards eligibility page, as of October 2026, requires a personal account and says business accounts and accounts belonging to political or government organizations aren't eligible.
The other requirements are the same for everyone who qualifies on account type: at least 18 years old (19 in South Korea), at least 10,000 followers, at least 100,000 video views in the last 30 days, videos at least one minute long, and residence in a country where the program runs.
So anyone who plans to earn from TikTok's own creator programs should stay on, or return to, a General account before chasing the thresholds. How many followers you need to get paid on TikTok goes through each gate and the one that catches most people.
Do business accounts get less reach?
TikTok doesn't say that business accounts are shown less, and its account types article doesn't list reach as a difference. Both types post to the same For You feed under the same recommendation system.
What business accounts often see is a side effect. Without the general music library they can't join sound-led trends, and trend participation is one of the ways videos find an audience quickly. Branded content that reads like an advert also tends to get skipped, and the recommendation system learns from skips.
If a business account's numbers look low, the music limit and the content are better suspects than a hidden penalty. Both types can also pay to promote a video with TikTok's Promote tool, which TikTok's article lists for General and Verified Business Accounts alike.
Is TikTok analytics only for business accounts?
No. TikTok's account types article says both account types provide analytics, and TikTok Studio's Analytics is available on General accounts as of October 2026. Older guides told people to switch to a Pro or business account to see their numbers; that hasn't been necessary for a long time.
Business accounts get extra reporting through Business Suite and TikTok's business products, which matters for teams running ads and collecting leads. For a creator, the analytics on a General account cover views, traffic sources, followers and per-video performance. How to see analytics on TikTok shows where each number lives.
Can you switch back to a personal account?
Yes. In the app, go to Profile, open the menu, then Settings and privacy, then Account, where the account type options live. Switching works in both directions.
TikTok's help article advises against switching back and forth, for a specific reason: if you switch from a Verified Business Account to a General account, your verification isn't saved, and you'll need to verify the business again if you return.
The music on old videos is the other thing to check before switching to business. Creators who switch commonly report that videos using tracks outside the Commercial Music Library can lose their sound, so a creator with a large back catalogue should think twice before making the move for one feature.
Which account type should you choose?
Use a General account if you are an individual creator, an artist, a public figure, or a small business owner who posts as a person. It keeps the full music library, the option to go private, and the path to Creator Rewards.
Use a Verified Business Account if you are a registered brand that needs Business Suite, leads and ad tools, and will make content with commercial-safe music anyway.
Use an Organization Account if several people need to run the same brand account with separate permissions.
Whatever the type, the profile is judged the same way by a visitor: the name, the bio, the videos and the follower count. A new account starts every one of those at zero, which is why some brands and creators buy TikTok followers for the public number while the content builds. It changes the count on the profile, not eligibility for Creator Rewards, which counts only real views. Every TikTok service is listed on the TikTok page.
