How to Turn Off Read Receipts on Instagram
Instagram has had a real switch for this since March 2024, and it works per conversation as well as across all of them. What it hides is narrower than people assume.
How to turn off read receipts on Instagram: open your profile, tap the three-line menu, go to Messages and story replies, tap Show read receipts and switch it off. As of October 2026 that stops people seeing the Seen label when you open their messages in all your chats, and you can also turn it off for a single conversation.
The setting has existed since March 2024, when Meta announced that you can choose to turn read receipts on or off for all of your chats or for specific ones. It's a quiet control: nobody is notified when you switch it, and the other person simply stops seeing Seen under the messages you open.
A read receipt on Instagram is the small Seen label that appears under a message once the recipient has opened it. It's useful when you're waiting on a reply and awkward when you aren't ready to give one, which is why the most common reason people look for this setting is to read a message now and answer later without the pressure of a visible Seen.
Instagram's own Help Center has a page for this, titled Manage read receipts for your chats on Instagram, and Meta's newsroom post from March 4, 2024 gives the global path: account settings, then Messages and story replies, then Show read receipts, then the toggle. The labels in Settings move between app versions, so if you don't see that exact wording, use the search bar at the top of Settings and type read receipts.
One distinction keeps this page short. Read receipts are about private messages. Public conversation happens in comments, which everyone can see and which work very differently: no Seen, no receipts, just a visible count under the post. Accounts that want that public side to look active sometimes add Instagram comments to a new post, and nothing in your DM settings touches it.
How do you turn off read receipts for every chat?
In current versions of the app, on iPhone or Android:
1. Open your profile and tap the three-line menu at the top right.
2. Scroll to Messages and story replies and tap it.
3. Tap Show read receipts.
4. Switch it off.
From then on, people you chat with stop seeing Seen when you open their messages. It isn't retroactive: messages already marked Seen stay that way. Switching it back on restores receipts for the messages you open afterwards.
Can you turn off read receipts for one person?
Yes. Meta's announcement describes the control as available for all of your chats or for specific ones, so you can keep receipts on in general and switch them off for the one conversation where you want breathing room.
The per-chat control lives inside the conversation rather than in the main Settings list. Open the chat, tap the person's name at the top to open the chat details, and look for read receipts among that chat's privacy options. If the switch isn't there in your version, the global setting above is the reliable route.
Neither change sends a notification. The other person will only notice that Seen stops appearing, and they have no way to tell whether that's a setting, a slow reply or a message you haven't opened yet.
Do read receipts work in group chats?
Groups show who has seen a message, and Meta's description of the setting covers your chats as a whole without carving out a separate rule for groups. Instagram doesn't publish a detailed note on how the per-chat switch behaves inside every type of group, and the behavior has changed between versions.
The practical answer is to check the group's own details screen for a read receipts option, and to assume, until you've seen it working, that the people in a busy group can still tell you've been reading along. If it matters, test it with a friend before relying on it.
Does turning off read receipts hide typing?
Don't count on it. Read receipts and the typing indicator are different signals, and Meta's description of the read receipts setting only talks about receipts. If you start typing a reply in an open chat, the other person may still see that you're typing even with receipts off.
The same goes for your online status. Whether people can see that you're active, or when you were last active, is controlled by Activity Status, which has its own Help Center page and its own switch in Settings. Turning off read receipts doesn't touch it, and turning off Activity Status doesn't touch read receipts. For a truly quiet inbox you need both off.
Can you read an Instagram DM without them knowing?
With receipts off, yes, that's what the setting is for. Without changing anything, the options are weaker:
- Read the notification preview. Your phone shows part of a new message on the lock screen or in the notification shade without opening the chat. Long messages get cut off.
- Airplane mode tricks are unreliable. The read state can sync once you reconnect, so the Seen may simply arrive later.
- Third-party apps that promise to read DMs without Seen want your Instagram login. Don't hand it over; an app with your password can do far more than read.
Do restricted accounts see read receipts?
Restrict changes this on its own, without the read receipt switch, because a restricted person's messages move to your requests. What that does to their view of your activity, and what else Restrict changes, is covered in what happens when someone restricts you on Instagram.
Why is the read receipts option missing?
Three usual reasons. First, an outdated app: the control arrived with the March 2024 messaging update, so update Instagram from your app store and look again. Second, the label moved: Settings is reorganized often, and searching Settings for read receipts finds it faster than browsing. Third, you're looking in the wrong conversation type, such as a message request, which you haven't accepted yet and which doesn't behave like a normal chat.
If none of those fix it, log out and back in, or clear the Instagram cache so the app reloads its settings, then check again. As a last check, switch accounts if you manage more than one; the setting applies to the account you're on, not to every account on the device.
What a hidden Seen says to the other person
Very little, which is the point. Someone who notices that Seen stopped appearing can't tell whether you turned receipts off, haven't opened the chat, or are reading on a device that hasn't synced. That ambiguity is why it's a polite setting rather than a hostile one.
If messages to someone have stopped going through altogether, that's a different situation, and how to tell if someone blocked you on Instagram explains the checks that separate a block from a quiet inbox. And if your worry is the reverse, whether people can see that you looked at their profile or Story, can people see you viewed their Instagram covers what is and isn't visible.
Private messages are one half of how people talk to an account; the public half is the comment section. That's where an empty thread looks empty to everyone, and where Instagram comments adds to what visitors see under a post, without touching your DMs. Every Instagram service is listed on the Instagram page.

How do I turn off read receipts on Instagram?
Open your profile, tap the three-line menu, go to Messages and story replies, tap Show read receipts and switch it off. People then stop seeing Seen when you open their messages.
Can I turn off read receipts for just one chat on Instagram?
Yes. Meta says you can turn read receipts on or off for all chats or for specific ones. Open the conversation, tap the name at the top and look for the read receipts option in that chat's settings.
Does Instagram notify someone when I turn off read receipts?
No. There's no notification. The other person only notices that Seen stops appearing under messages you open.
Does turning off read receipts hide my active status?
No. Activity Status is a separate setting with its own switch. To hide both when you read and when you're online, turn off read receipts and Activity Status.
Will messages I already read lose the Seen label?
No. The setting applies to messages you open after switching it off. Anything already marked Seen stays marked.
Why can't I find the read receipts setting on Instagram?
Usually the app is outdated or the menu label has moved. Update Instagram, then search Settings for read receipts, and make sure you're on the account you want to change.
